2016-17 Spectacular Jazz Series - St. Cecilia Music Center

2016-17 Spectacular Jazz Series

Joey Alexander – March 23, 2017

joey-alexander-1At twelve years of age jazz prodigy Joey Alexander has been nominated for three Grammy Awards, featured on the CBS Show “60 Minutes,” and has performed at the White House, Lincoln Center and at jazz festivals around the globe.

Born in Bali, Joey first encountered a piano at the age of six, and was immediately able to pick out by ear the melody of Thelonious Monk’s “Well, You Needn’t” and other jazz standards from his father’s record collection.

His father, an amateur musician, nurtured Joey’s gift for swing and improvisation by introducing him to classic jazz recordings and taking him to jam sessions with seasoned musicians in Bali and Jakarta.

Learning by listening, Joey was playing jazz festivals by the age of eight. His early influences include Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Wynton Marsalis.

the music of Miles Davis

For 2016-17, the Collective will pay tribute to trumpeter, composer, and innovator Miles Davis. More than any other figure, Davis changed the sound of jazz – not once, but consistently over his career – from the birth of bebop in the 1940’s to the integration of rock approaches that gave rise to the fusion movement in the 1970’s.

The concert will feature:

Miguel Zenon on Alto Saxophone; David Sanchez on tenor saxophone; Sean Jones on trumpet; Robin Eubank on trombone; Warren Wolf on vibraphone; Edward Simon on piano, Matt Penman on bass and Obed Calvaire on drums performing the music of Miles Davis and original compositions.
