Dave Holland is in his fifth decade as a performer, and his music possesses a rich and kaleidoscopic history. His path has led him from the frontiers of free improvisation to his modern ensembles that fully embody the Sam Rivers-instilled philosophy of “playing all of it.”

The Wolverhampton, England, native got his big break performing with Miles Davis. Solo, and in collaboration, Holland became a dominant voice in the 1970s – partnering with Rivers, and working with musicians such as Bonnie Raitt and John Hartford. He even had a passing encounter with Jimi Hendrix.

Holland formed his first working quintet in 1983, and released Jumpin’ In, and continued to develop other varied and fruitful relationships with artists such as Anthony Braxton, Stan Getz, Cassandra Wilson, Jack DeJohnette, Chick Corea, Thelonious Monk, Betty Carter, Bill Frisell and Herbie Hancock over the course of his career.

Jupiter String Quartet Program:

Haydn………..Quartet in F Major, Op. 77, No. 2
Ravel…………Quartet in F Major
Schubert……Quartet in G Major, D. 887

The JUPITER STRING QUARTET formed in 2001 and consists of violinists Nelson Lee and Megan Freivogel, violist Liz Freivogel (older sister of Meg), and cellist Daniel McDonough (husband of Meg, brother-in-law of Liz).

The quartet spent many of their formative years under the instruction of the eminent Cleveland Quartet and Takacs Quartet, and continue to adhere to many of their central principles today. While enjoying the opportunity to work with living composers, they still feel a strong and fundamental connection to the core string quartet literature, particularly Beethoven and Bartok.

The Jupiters have receive several recent chamber music honors, including first prize in the Banff International String Quartet Competition, grand prize in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competion, membership in Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society Two, and Chamber Music America’s Cleveland Quartet Award. The quartet also won the 2005 Young Concert Artists International auditions and now holds YCA’s Helen F. Whitaker Chamber Music Chair. Most recently, they were honored to receive an Avery Fisher Career Grant.

The quartet performs across the United States, Canada, Europe, Mexico, and South America. They have also been enthusiastically received at several major music festivals and have been the quartet-in-residence at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center since 2008.

Boccherini’s Fandango Quintet

Named for the classical god of music and the sun, Apollo’s Fire was founded in 1992 by the award-winning young harpsichordist and conductor Jeannette Sorrell. Apollo’s Fire is a collection of creative artists who share Sorrell’s passion for drama and rhetoric.

The ensemble has toured throughout North America and made its European debut tour in November 2010, to standing ovations in Spain and the Netherlands, and a sold-out crowd at London’s Wigmore Hall.

Apollo’s Fire has released 17 commercial CD’s, and currently records for the British label AVIE. The recordings have won rave reviews in the London press: “a swaggering version, brilliantly played” (THE TIMES). The fall 2010 release of the Monteverdi Vespers made the Top 10 on the classical Billboard chart. Apollo’s Fire is broadcast frequently on National Public Radio, Canada’s CBC, Britain’s BBC, and the European Broadcasting Union. The ensemble’s television special “Discovering Vivaldi,” produced by Cleveland’s PBS television station, will begin national syndication on PBS stations in 2011.

Nicholas Payton is the embodiment of every trumpet player who came before him, and he leads the way for all who follow. Hailed as a virtuoso before he was even out of high school, his maturation as a prodigious talent has earned him praise as one of the most important artists of our time.

Nicholas Payton was born in1973 in New Orleans, Louisiana, into a musical family. Encouraged by his mother, a pianist and vocalist, and his father the legendary bassist, composer and educator Walter Payton, Nicholas showed talent for music at a very early age. He received his first trumpet at age four and by age nine was sitting-in with local bands including the Young Tuxedo Brass Band. By the age of 12 he was a member of the All Star Brass Band that performed and toured extensively.

Nicholas has toured with scores of musicians including Clark Terry, Marcus Roberts, Ray Brown, Elvin Jones, and Roy Haynes and many more. He has also performed and recorded with many musicians representing a multitude of musical genres from jazz, R&B, and hip-hop and is credited on well over 120 recordings as a composer, arranger, special guest or sideman.

As a leader, Nicholas has recorded 8 albums under his own name including Doc Cheatham and Nicholas Payton—a 1997 GRAMMY® award-winning collaboration with the legendary trumpeter.

Nicholas has recently completed his 9th recording as a leader—a bold autobiographical solo masterwork— a love story that musically chronicles the joys and heartbreak of relationship. A provocative and breakthrough recording on many levels, Nicholas played every instrument, composed all the songs, wrote all the lyrics, produced each track, and sings and plays trumpet throughout. He is accompanied by special guest vocalists Cassandra Wilson, Esperanza Spalding, N’Dambi, Chinah Blac, and Saunders Sermons.

Nicholas Payton is a genius musician, a gifted composer and producer and a skilled astute writer. His craft and artistry defy all restrictions leaving little that he cannot do.
