Youth Programs
YOUTH ENSEMBLES AND OFFERINGS
Whether they aspire to musical careers or they simply enjoy making music, participants in our youth ensembles have a wonderful opportunity to work with others as they refine their technical skills and develop a deeper understanding of music and its dynamics. Weekly rehearsals, regularly scheduled clinics and concert performances provide groundwork for musical growth.
$396 Per Year / $200 Per Semester (1 Student)

SINFONIA
An entry-level string orchestra, this group introduces beginners to the elements of teamwork and ensemble performance.
Conductor Sara Jager, Rehearsal Mondays, 5:30-7 p.m.

CONCERT ORCHESTRA
The Concert Orchestra is a preparatory string ensemble that focuses on classical music and is for intermediate students with little to moderate ensemble experience.
Conductor Dr. Mark Kotchenruther, Rehearsal Mondays, 5:15-6:45 p.m.
PHILHARMONIC
An advanced orchestra, complete with strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion, the Philharmonic plays challenging works ranging from the classics to movie scores and Broadway.

CONCERT BAND
A wind, brass and percussion ensemble for middle school students grades 6-9, the Concert Band focuses on traditional band music plus the extra challenge of original works by local musicians.

JUNIOR MUSIC CLUBS
This program offers an opportunity for students grades K-12 to gain performance experience and meet professional musicians to benefit from their expertise. Club participants also have the chance to compete for scholarships to local and national summer music programs. Junior Music Clubs of St. Ceciliar Music Center are part of the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) and follow the NFMC’s rules for compensation and dues. Students must be taking lessons from a private teacher who is a St. Cecilia donor to particiapte in club performances and Festival Cup.
$12 per year, Clubs meet Fridays, October through February, 4:15-5:15 p.m.

OPERATUNITY
Offers student groups, individuals and home school families an exploration of the themes, characters, or music of each opera production in Opera Grand Rapids’ season. For reservations call the SCMC education office 616.459.2224.

Piano students receive individual and ensemble lessons, theory and ear-training classes, music history and supervised practice time. Offered in collaboration with the David D. Hunting YMCA.

Detailed instruction and high-energy jam sessions offer middle school and high school string players an opportunity to expand their musical horizons by experimenting with improvisation, diverse playing styles and instruments other than their own.

Sessions instructed by members of The Outer Vibe for middle and high school students who have experience with vocals, electric guitar, bass, keyboard or drum sets. Students will be grouped into bands and prepare for a concert end of the week at The Intersection. *Students who play other instruments or who have limited experience should contact SCMC.

Tickets $5 in advance will be available at Intersection Lounge or from any of the performing bands (Rock Camp students will receive tickets on the first day of camp to sell). SCMC Rock Camp is a collaboration with St. Cecilia Music Center, The Outer Vibe and The Intersection.
SCHOOL OF MUSIC CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS
ROCK SONGWRITING WORKSHOP
Members of The Outer Vibe will group the students into bands, explore with them the qualities of a good pop/rock song and compare iconic pop/rock songs to their own song ideas. Students will play their own instruments and the bands will use what they’ve learned to write, perform and record an original song. Existing bands are encouraged to sign up together for this exciting workshop.

BEGINNING VIOLIN GROUP LESSONS
Coming in January: group violin lessons for youngsters, grades 4 and 5, who are just starting out. No experience necessary. For more information, call the education office, 616.459.2224.
MUSIC THEORY CLASSES
Music theory is the foundation on which musical excellence is built. Every musician needs to know the basics of note reading, intervals, scales, rhythm, harmony, melody, structure, form and much more. Used correctly, music theory helps students understand music in many different ways. Each class will consist of learning theoretical concepts through written projects and class interaction as well as ear-training exercises.

ROCK CAMP SPRING BREAK ESCAPE
Sessions instructed by members of The Outer Vibe for experienced electric guitar, bass, keyboard, drum set or vocal musicians help students understand what it takes to be in a band. Students are grouped into bands and prepare for a special end-of -the-week concert at The Intersection.
